Adoption
is such a complex issue that everyone has a lot to learn- not only
the prospective parents but also the institutions, professionals,
and the neighbors and friends who assist them. Who has the ability
to provide effective training? For many, the answer has been the Center
For Family Connections.
We are a nonprofit
agency founded by pioneering expert Dr. Joyce Maguire Pavao. We have
been serving families and professionals in the Boston area for more
than two decades.
We are skilled
at teaching professionals the best way to handle the many psychological,
education, and legal issues that adoption involves. The training we
provide helps them better identify, understand, and integrate the
developmental issues unique to the pre- and post-adoptive populations.
We have programs
aimed at therapists, private and public agencies, hospitals and residential
treatment centers, lawyers and judges, educators and clergy. In our
advocacy stance, we coordinate activities with other mental health
professionals, legislators, and the media.
We train professionals
to help couples, single parents, and extended families to deal with
problems of untimely pregnancy, infertility, and reproductive technology.
We help clarify issues and identify options. We explore the kinds
of adoption that are available and help determine when families are
really ready to adopt.
In short, we
provide training for complete pre- and post-adoption counseling. Our
services are intergenerational, culturally sensitive, and systemic.
We meet the lifelong challenges contracted by all members facing the
challenges of being part of a complex blended family.
Through it all,
our guiding principle is the constant recognition that adoption is
not a single event. It is a life-long adventure.
